Thermal imaging is an effective method of identifying if there are any hidden defects within a building. The use of a thermal imaging camera can identify insulation deficiencies, retained moisture, pipe or flue blockages and so on, all from the temperature differences.
Not only does this help to identify problems, such as dampness, but it also avoids access problems to overhead ducts or cables, as direct contact is not needed.
Infrared thermography is the process of using a thermal imaging camera to view images of the heat patterns emitted from a surface or surfaces. In context, this information enables us to identify particular patterns of heat radiation that indicate faults or areas of interest.

The dynamics behind thermal imaging of flat roofs are essentially the same. Temperature differential allows us to show where flat roofs are leaking or have failing insulation present.
Damp and dry roof insulation have a different thermal mass so by exploiting one of two windows of opportunity to image the roof found at either end of the day, it is possible to locate these areas. As dry roof insulation heats up and cools quicker than damp roof insulation, a temperature anomaly will form in the affected area and it is this area that is most likely to have the problem.
