Kershaw Rises to the Challenge with Innovative Insulation Installation

July 23 2014

The Insulation Refurbishment Division of Cambridge based, energy saving experts Kershaw Contracting Services Limited has recently helped Haringey Council to reduce carbon emissions from its portfolio of hard-to-treat, high-rise properties and make them more energy efficient using specialist abseiling teams.

The funding mechanism for the works was derived from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which was initially welcomed by Haringey Council as it provided a subsidised means of having cavity wall insulation installed into multiple, Homes for Haringey tower blocks.  However, subsequent changes to the ECO scheme this year left the Council with the dilemma of outstanding tower blocks still to insulate and a rapidly narrowing funding window.

Fortunately, Kershaw Contracting Services was able to step in, assess and report on the situation for the client, and provide a timely and proficient solution, free of charge.  Working closely with Haringey Council, the Kershaw team very quickly identified which blocks were suitable for insulation and agreed a project plan which ensured the remaining blocks were insulated well in advance of the forthcoming ECO changes.

Traditionally, the access for high-rise cavity wall insulation installation is provided by expensive scaffolding access systems.  However in this case, the cavity wall insulation installation process was carried out by abseiling teams who took just six weeks to complete the works to 13 high-rise tower blocks.

Tenants of the 499 flats are now benefitting from homes which are warmer, more comfortable and less expensive to heat.

John Mathers, Haringey Council said “I was extremely impressed by the helpful attitude of Kershaw throughout the project.  Every morning they arrived promptly and carried out their work with the utmost professionalism.  I would have no hesitation in working with them in the future.”
